Singing Playground BSG Guangzhou 16-02-2012
Singing Playground

Ex-Cathedra’s Singing Playgrounds visited the school in full energetic voice, bringing song and dance to Key Stage One and Two.

Singing Playgrounds is a project that commenced in 2004, and has since gone on to be delivered in over 250 schools across the UK, New Zealand and Thailand. The unique combination of using children’s singing games enables a school to establish a culture of singing that benefits individuals and the community as a whole.

The British School of Guangzhou is now a part of this scheme, and from 13th to 15th February, students were treated to a host of different workshops, which exercised the vocal chords to catchy, memorable tunes that could then be transferred to playground games.

Leading the visit was founder, Urszula Weber, with vocal tutors, Claire Hollocks and Susannah Vango, and pianist, Robert Challinor.

The schedule involved whole Key Stage singing practices in the theatre and individual class and choir workshops, with fun and games at break times and lunch. Parents also got involved, with a lively evening singsong on 14th.

It was a fantastic few days, with children discovering new interests in music, making friends and finding the potential to open up and enjoy themselves with their peers. Students who showed particular enthusiasm were also chosen as song leaders to encourage others to take part.

BSG will be implementing this programme into the academic timetable in Primary, encouraging the 30 chosen song leaders to take Singing Playgrounds out to playtime every day.
