Community Service
Fund Raising

Fund raising events for specific causes or charitable organisations are held at the school regularly throughout the year involving pupils from all age groups within the school. Staff and parents are also encouraged to engage students interest and take part.

Community Service

The British School of Guangzhou is a privileged environment but its pupils are encouraged to gain an understanding and empathy of the situation of others. Opportunities for community service are fostered within the school and built into the PSHE curriculum.

Charity

The school also regularly donates funds and materials to the underprivileged, and our Fund Raising and Events Committee are extremely active in helping promote awareness of poverty to the members of the school and wider expatriate community.

Innovative Education Project: ActionAid 2011-12

This academic year, we will be raising funds for an international organisation called ActionAid, who have have been working in remote villages across China for over 10 years. ActionAid focuses on the development of education, agriculture and women's rights.

Over the summer, I was lucky enough to intern in their Beijing office and create a project unique to BSG.

Our project will be to sponsor the village school of Jie'an in the remote county of Tiandeng, in the neighbouring province of Guangxi. Our funds will focus on the educational development of middle school pupils through sport, music and English lessons. However, as the school not only lacks resources, we will also be supporting the professional development of the school's teachers through skills exchange lessons.

The objectives of the project are to;

1. improve the English level of the students.

2. enrich students' extracurricular activities to improve their capacity in sports and arts.

3. build the capacity of teachers to increase the quality of teaching.

In order to meet these objectives, we will need to raise an ambitious £5000 to purchase instruments, equipment, etc, but I am sure that with the help and support of students, teachers and parents, we will be able to meet our target.

Please follow our updates every month in the newsletter.
